Question:

Is there a New Member Handbook available?

Answer:

Yes! This handbook serves as your own personal reference guide to Chapter VIII's Police Unity Tour.

Question:

Who can participate as a rider?

Answer:

Ride Members must be a sworn law enforcement officer, active or retired.  Immediate family members of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty (survivors) may also participate as a Ride member.  All participants must be at least 18 years of age. 

Question:

Who can participate as a member of the SUPPORT TEAM?

Answer:

Support members must be an active or retired law enforcement officer, an immediate family member of an active or retired law enforcement officer, survivor or sponsored by a current Ride member.  All participants must be at least 18 years of age.

Question:

What are the dates of this year's Police Unity Tour?

Answer:

The Police Unity Tour Chapter VIII ride dates are May 10th through May 12th each year as the Candlelight Vigil is on May 13th.  As a member, it is strongly suggested that you attend this ceremony. 

Question:

What is required of me to participate?

Answer:

First, you must become a member of the Police Unity Tour Chapter VIII ($25.00 membership fee). Once a member, you will be required to register for the Police Unity Tour event ($100.00 registration fee).  Ride and Support members are required to raise a minimum of $2000.00. Ride members, in addition to the monetary requirement, will be required to complete and submit qualifying rides of 75 and 50 miles. Ride members will be required to complete their qualifying rides within a specific time and pace.

Note: The membership fee and registration fee are non-refundable and non-transferable. However, the registration fee is tax deductible.

Question:

How do I get a Tour jacket and/or bicycle jersey?

Answer:

First year members will be provided a jacket and jersey upon arrival in Norfolk.

Question:

Do I need to make hotel reservations?

Answer:

No, we will make the hotel reservations and cover the hotel expenses for May 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th & 13th for RIDE & SUPPORT members.   

Question:

How far is the Route?

Answer:

The whole ride is approximately 250 miles.  The first day is about 110 miles; however, it is almost entirely flat.  The next two days are about 70 miles each and consist of some rolling hills.  The route varies slightly each year due to construction and road blockages.

Question:

What is the pace?

Answer:

You should train for and be comfortable riding 15-18 MPH. Sometimes the pace will reach speeds of 20 MPH, sometimes it will be slower. The average over the three day ride will be between 15-18 MPH. There are hills, don't forget hill training!

Question:

When do I need to arrive in Norfolk?

Answer:

There is a mandatory Orientation meeting the morning of May 9th, so it is recommended that you arrive May 8th.

Question:

Where do I fly into?

Answer:

The closest airport is Norfolk International Airport, and it is roughly about 9 miles from our hotel.

Question:

How do I get from the airport to the hotel?

Answer:

There will be a shuttle provided from Norfolk Airport to the Sheraton Hotel, but you must sign-up for it.

Question:

When is the Candlelight Vigil?

Answer:

The vigil is held the evening of May 13th, we will leave our hotel as a group in mid-afternoon on the 13th.

Question:

How do I get back to Norfolk?

Answer:

You are responsible for your own transportation arrangements.
